Needless to say, almost all of us want our Christmas decorations to last a lifetime. And wherever you look for suggestions on how to achieve this, it all boils down on how you set up as well as store the decorations. It may sound as a vague advice but proper handling and storing are the keys in keeping your Christmas ornaments on their tip-top shape before the Holiday kicks in.
Here's a quick yet thorough guide on how to arrange and keep your fragile Christmas decorations before and after the season:
Setting-up
For many, setting up is an exciting process since they can spurt their creativity and resourcefulness out during this time. However, handling fragile decorations requires more time and attention in order to secure their condition.
Make an Inventory - Creating an inventory, even though an informal list can really make a difference. All you need to do is list down all the fragile ornaments such as those with glass, composed with brittle materials, and have a thin dimension. Write down their condition before hanging or placing them in your home so you would know their exact status.
Mind the Environment - Do you have a family pet? How about little children? How big is your area? These are some questions you should answer first before setting up fragile decorations. Don't place these ornaments on places where your kids or pets could easily reach or bump them. When it comes to Christmas trees, do not hang these delicate items on the outer and lower limbs of the tree. Stick them near the base and at the center as much as possible.
Prudent Set-up - When you are to place the decorations on their respective places, have an extra precaution about their exact location. Always consider the height and base of the material where you put the decoration. In this manner, you are lessening the possible risk of damage.
Storing
When it comes to preserving the delicate ornaments' condition, the storing process plays a more important role. Most homeowners commit mistakes in storing these decorations since they are tired and got a hang-over from the Holiday. As a result, they just place them in the nearest box and pile them up in the attic or storage room. And in order to avoid this situation from happening, here are some helpful and easy-to-do tips in stashing away your delicate ornaments:
Segregate - Before packing the ornaments, place similar items with each other. Always bear in mind their similarities in durability, proportion, and size; not their colour or theme.
Consider a Durable Storage Container - One of the prevalent reasons why decorations are subjected to wear and tear during the storage period is because of container's condition. Put away your old and soft boxes and use sturdy containers instead. In storing wreaths, garlands, and other fragile ornaments that can be deformed easily, consider getting a special box or a shaped container that will exactly fit the item.
Place an Extra Layer of Protection - If the ornament is made from pure glass, cover them first with a newspaper or any thick paper before placing in the container. Also, place a protective layer (a paper or a cushion) at the base of the container to avoid scratches and dust insertion.
Keep the Wires Untangled - If the decoration has wires on it, make sure that it is tangle-free before placing them in containers. This is highly recommended to Christmas lights and light displays in order to protect the wiring from possible damages.
Label the Containers - Lastly, label each container in order to avoid any hassle and confusion once you need a specific decoration only. You can easily write it on a piece of paper and tape it on the container's cover.
Additional Reminders
Once you are done packing, pile the containers in an orderly fashion. If you got enough space, don't stack them and place them on their respective spaces instead. But if you are working on a limited space, make sure that the heaviest container is at the base while the lightest is at the top.
If you have the time, check the containers every 3-4 months to ensure that everything's fine and no dust or anything is ruining your precious and delicate Christmas ornaments.
